Separating the Glitz from the Game

Roulette is an incredibly popular game in traditional casinos, largely because of its reputation. It's often featured in movies or television shows where gambling place a central role, and is often associated with glamorous high rollers and big risks. The large crowd that often congregates around a roulette table only adds to this general appeal and popularity. The game itself, however, is much more basic than its appearance might suggest.

The Components

Part of the glitz and glamour associated with roulette is due to the equipment used. The large roulette table and wheel make the game seem complex when the rules are actually very simple. Players simply need to place bets on different numbered squares on the roulette table, and the croupier alone spins the wheel.

A Waiting Game

Another misconception is that roulette is a game of non-stop action. While the game does contain a thrill factor, the intensity largely comes from the suspense of waiting. After the croupier spins the wheel, all of the players must simply wait and hope that the silver ball lands in a pocket corresponding to one of their bets. The exciting thing is that if it does, it's possible to win a lot of money.

Roulette has also made its way online, attracting a new crowd of gamblers who prefer to play the game at home rather than in a regular casino. Even with a live dealer, online roulette is a very different experience from the actual live version, but the rules are the same.
